If you thought the Digital Mums course is about Social Media, well you could be forgiven for thinking so. Or rather, let me expand. If you thought joining the Digital Mums course is only about Social Media, this is where I will have to stop you and warn you. It’s much much more than that!

The honest truth? How ready are you for a radical life change?

The thing about going to a psychiatrist or seeking guidance from a counselor is that you are never in the mood to do so. It’s a difficult process, it’s a long process, it’s not one you would choose for yourself and you’d be reticent to put any changes into practice. Well, this is where this Digital Mums Course comes into its own.

You would have chosen this course yourself!

You would have chosen this course willingly!

You would have dedicated study time willingly!

You would have decided to make the changes necessary to progress, all by yourself for yourself!

Word of caution: the course is much more than that. The course will take you into a process of self-discovery and unchartered territory. It will challenge you in ways you could not have imagined and it will spit you out as a heroine to yourself and to others. It will make you into the strongest version of yourself you have ever been but fear not! Your cohort will keep your feet firmly on the ground. This is what happens when you sweat, work and toil and venture into unchartered terrain. We started in January 2018 and finished in July 2018, an intensive six months course with school holidays accounted for in between.

Behold! The course is not for the faint-hearted nor is it for someone who is not willing to put in the work. If you choose to sign up for a course, then you are choosing to study. And study you must despite having a family and childcare. Your cohort (your assigned peer group linked to you on what’s app) is designed to keep you all together, to learn from each other, support each other, encourage and psyche each other up, making sure no one falls by the wayside as there are some fallouts! If you’re lucky like we were (The Social Sirens) then you would have made yourself lifelong friends who know your every weakness and your every strength, who can laugh and cry with you – because you’ll be doing a lot of that, laughing and crying!

The truth? Social media is a new phenomenon. This course was conceived and put into action by two wonderful strong women Kathryn Tyler and Nikki Cochrane. Did they ever imagine they would be so successful and would have so many interested mothers? You would have to ask them that. Did they have a superb idea that they somehow managed to put into action? Yes, they did! It goes without saying that the course curriculum is not the most up to date. Why? Well, it just cannot be. Social media changes its colours every single day, every single minute. How can you possibly conceive a course that is flexible like that? Well, you can’t. So why, you may ask, did Kathryn and Nikki still bother going through with this course curriculum?

Simple! Offering this Digital Media Social Media Management Course is a jolly good idea. It is one of a kind. It is affordable only if you think of it as a proper course and a life changer. You can secure yourself a student card and you receive an accreditation for completing the course. The course was conceived to champion and support the 3M unemployed mothers who find it difficult and challenging going back to work, let alone full-time employment. The course does much more than that! It teaches you social media while forcing you to put the lessons into practice. It teaches resilience, perseverance, courage, strength, and self-respect. It also empowers and gives every single mum a chance to reinvent herself. Actually, as it turns out, not reinventing herself. Just digging deep and finding her true self again. The real person, the strong powerful person she has always been.

Us digital mums, we are a phenomenon of our own. You can spot us a mile away on digital platforms, we support each other. We learn from each other and we teach each other. We are totally strong, together and alone. We started this course without a voice and we’ve come out of it with a voice and a platform. You’ll find most of us will be keeping our chosen platforms as we’ve spent too long and toiled too hard to leave it all behind. We have made friends, met loads of people and if we’re lucky found a new additional path to our lives.

And we only got here through choosing to take on the Digital Mums Course. Sure, it’s not perfect, far from perfect. But we all came out of it as wonder beings. So, as with all things, we learn to give thanks and move on. Moving on we are, watch out world! Here come the digital mums!

Great to read this! I am doing the June course so currently feeling a bit rabbit caught in headlights! At the.veey starting point of first campaign draft and don’t have a clue to be honest!! But I’m enjoying it and it’s making me think and use my brain differently which is what I wanted and needed! Like your site and philosophy!

Thank you, Sally, and well done for doing the Digital Mums course. TBH, if anyone of us were asked “did you know what you were letting yourself into?”, we’d all answer in the negative. None of us had a clue! and we were all caught in the headlights, old and young, new mum or long time out of work. We are eight cohorts. Each and every one of us has been ‘saved’ by this course. As Kathryn well pointed out to me, it’s not that we ‘become’ better, this course is the little helping hand and nudge we all need to ‘get it back together’. Good luck! You’re doing super!
